Snoozella
Academic (2024)
This was a self portrait assignment where we had to include a more complex background. I had the funny idea of dressing in very poor quality drag with a wig and press on nails; whilst getting caught rifling through a fridge. In order to start this assignment I had to put on my extremely low effort costume and recruit my father to take a good photo on him posed the way I wanted. Initially, I was going to clean my mother’s kitchen before taking the photo but I thought the clutter filled in what would otherwise be too much negative space. After taking the photos I noticed that the lighting coming from my mom’s living room was warm and the light from the fridge was so cool toned it left a blue light on everything it touched; I knew I wanted to convey that in the final piece but I wasn’t sure how I was going to accomplish that, so my light sketch while scheming. The only colored media I had that would cooperate with pencils at the time was chalk pastels, but they where too vibrant and opaque for me to use as a base. With limited time and prayers that I didn’t annoy my neighbors, I put the chalk pastels into plastic bags, hit them with a hammer until they became dust, and them brushed them on with a makeup brush. On top of that layer, I went back and darkened in all the shadows with several pencils until I was satisfied with the piece. This assignment was a fun way to discover that none of the counters in my mothers kitchen had the same perspective.
